Sorry Mark; I was thinking of the 289-302s with the 5/16" bolts & weak pump shaft. It was pretty late when I posted that and I think my brain was already asleep. As far as what I said about changing plugs, A buddy had a '75 Comet that he put a 351 in. He heavily modified the shock towers and he STILL had to jack up the motor to change the #4 plug (don't ask me why). Also, I didn't know you were using those AWSOME cylinder heads. That's probably where most of the power is coming from because a 351W with stock heads will not perform the way your engines do. I STILL doubt however, that a Maverick with any engine will run 12s on "STREET" tires with 3.50:1 gears. You've gotta have slicks & lower gears to achieve that. But you definately have the power.
BTW: Actually, I was born of dogs but am not really all that stupid...

: 1. 351's do not have 5/16 rod bolts. They are 3/8.Pump shaft
: is larger, also.Good bolts and strong shafts are SOP, at least
: in my shop, even on stock rebuilds.
: 2. These are not PAPER FIGURES!!! By God, I live and work
: in the real world, and what I said here are times my customers
: have turned in similar cars, and hp and torque were taken on
: Gary Duckworth's dyno. I'm at the track several times a
: month, helping and watching customers, and I see what
: I reported. One of my guys is knocking at the ten second
: door with one of my 347's, no power adder, and street driven.
: 3. My street-driven, 306 Maverick turned 12.68 with street
: tires and stiff suspension in 1990. With a looser suspension,
: better convertor, and 4.57s, it went 11.80's in 1991. I fully
: expect the 377C car I am building at the moment to go TENS in
: streetable trim. We have some NINE SECOND cars that regularly
: street race in this area(Mostly BB Chevs).
: 4. A 450hp motor in a light chassis(say, 2800lbs w/driver),
: should be good for EASY mid tens. High 11's... what a roach!
: Cars like that are what make people laugh at Fords, and I have
: to continually explain em away to my Chevy customers.
: 5. The 351 block is MUCH stouter than the 302 block, as my junk
: hauling guy will testify,as he rarely sees a 351.
: 6. Enlighten me. Other than an extra 30 minutes to change plugs
: every 2 YEARS or so, why is a 351 harder to install or maintain?
: 7. EVERY one of my customers who has switched from a 302 to a 351
: has wondered why they didn't do it sooner.
: 8. Notice the engine I spoke of does not have Ford heads. By the time
: you rework em to a decent level, you've spent more than a set of iron
: Darts.
: 9. These are my REAL WORLD opinions, based on my experience and customer
: base feedback. If you disagree, you are stupid and were born of dogs,
: BUT DON"T TELL ME THEY ARE NOT REAL WORLD.Dream world is people on the
: Internet who want detailed price quotes on a $2500 set of heads, but
: couldn't cover a $50 check. "Right dude, we'll just GIVE em to ya.Shipping?
: Yeah, we'll pick that up too."
