The logic behind this was solely $$$$. Ford was saving money. In my '70, I got tired of exact same thing, so during a junkyard trip, i found a perfect bottom 1/2 including a glove box. I got the whole thing for about $15-20. Although it doesn't match up perfectly with my old dash, it doesn't look that bad, and took a little creativity, but nothing anyone couldn't do. It also had vents that I plan on turing into speaker holders, or something else. Anyway, it worked for me. Sorry I don't know the year of the donor car, but there were quite a few out there.....good luck.
