The switch to R134a also requires retro-fitting your seals to be compatible with that refrigerant if you want it to operate properly (the R134a oil and refrigerant will destroy the "old" seals that have been "contaminated" by the R12 if you don't) so my training said. (I am IMACA certified)
Even if you stick with the R12 , you should replace all your seals anyway...after 25+ yrs they're just waiting to leak out all that EXPEN$IVE R12 you just paid for ($65/lb retail when I last checked locally). It's some REALLY inexpenive "insurance" to keep your A/C running cool! (Around $10 for the O-rings and a couple hours work)
: : I bought my '72 mav 302 about 4 months ago. It had factory air but the pump was froze so it would actually kill the motor if you turned it on. Since the pump was huge and taking up valuable space/power, I took it off. The auto parts store wants $260 for a rebuilt one. At first I didn't think I would need it because I only have one more month of hot weather left. Well, as it turns out, this has been a really hot summer even by California standards hitting 111 degrees a couple days ago. I was at the junk yard today and found 2 mavericks with the I-6 that had a/c. The pump is a lot smaller than the original one from my 302. Does anyone know if this pump will fit? I didn't pay a lot of attention to the way it was mounted in there. Has anyone had any experience with finding a different a/c compressor in a different car? Should I trust one from a junkyard?
: : Sorry bout the long post.

: Before going to far in this project, check to see if the "new" rebuilt compressor is set up for the r134a freon. If it is, it will cost you significantly less $$$ to charge your system. Here in NJ I went to recharge my 89 Probe and it cost $135 just for the R12 freon - and that was a good deal (and it keeps getting more expensive).

: I noticed that there are some R12 freon subsitutes available (www.frigc.com). Has anyone used these?
