Before going to far in this project, check to see if the "new" rebuilt compressor is set up for the r134a freon. If it is, it will cost you significantly less $$$ to charge your system. Here in NJ I went to recharge my 89 Probe and it cost $135 just for the R12 freon - and that was a good deal (and it keeps getting more expensive).

I noticed that there are some R12 freon subsitutes available (www.frigc.com). Has anyone used these?
