: I don't really know the cause of or solution to your problem, but I find it interesting. This is gonna sound dumb but are you sure you got the right starter? I've been trough 5 starters in my '73 V-8 and I had one years ago that wouldn't disengage (it would spin the whole time while I drove) and it chipped a few teeth on the flexplate. What year is your car and which engine is it?? It almost sounds like a mismatch between starter & flexplate/flywheel gear but I'm totally speculating. I've never heard of such a problem before. Maybe Ron knows (he's pretty smart)...

Thanks for the responses.
The motor and tranny were donated from a 72 Mach 1. I don't know exactly what type of 302 it is but I do know that it has the 302HO ( or 351) firing order. The wrong starter is a possibility, I had to make a flywheel spacer (1/4" thick)
to go between the fly wheel and crank when I put the new flywheel in. Starter is a NAPA starter, I don't have it in front of me but I could get the part# off of it if anyone could help identify.
By the way Ron, I have burned my eyebrows, hit my head on the hood, broken fingers and worn out every cuss word I know( and then some that I don't) Worth it? you betcha
E-mail me if any one has any more ideas as to what this problem is. Its crusing season and my #$^%#$% car is broke
