I apologize. I forgot to include a few facts. The carb was really hot and emitted a smell like burning wood. My excellent mechanic ran it in gear on a lift and couldn't get it to glow like that again. You have to drive it to get repeatable results. He adjusted the timing and checked the mixture. Everything checked out. He didn't think a rebuild would necessarily solve the problem, so he suggested getting a carb. second hand before rebuilding or buying a remanufactured carb. I thought that the float would have to sink so that the fuel reservoir would flood and dump extra fuel out of the venturi orifice. I checked the float - A OK. It could still be the automatic choke. Thanks for the advice.

: The cat is supposed to glow red That's how it does its job. . If the motor is running "rich", adjust the air/fuel mixture (make sure the timing is correct first). If that doesn't work, you may have a high float in the carburetor or a stuck or misadjusted choke. Try a rebuild kit. If you get another used carb from a junkyard; it's gonna need rebuilt anyway. If all else fails--you can always ask Craig or Ron...

: : I have a 200 ci inline 6 on a 1976 Mav.
: : The Mav is dumping more fuel into the engine which
: : ends up getting combusted in the catalytic converter.
: : This causes the cat. to glow red (not good).
: : I can't find the original part (carb.) in any local
: : junkyards. Anybody got a '76 or matching that they
: : are willing to part with?
