Pre-Maverick days I've owned two Japanese cars and they BOTH blew their head gaskets... (aluminiom heads, cast iron blocks...)
Before you do anything like shaving down the head have it pressure checked (I am being assumtive here that it can be done to "real metal").
If your head is cracked it won't do any good to shave it.
