I put a 9-inch in my Maverick. It was a Versailles unit with rear discs. Lincoln Versailles (Granada's Lincoln cousin) had 9-inch rears with discs standard. They are rare. The brakes were hard to fit,the rear the rear end easy. The experience taught me that a Mercury Monarch or Ford Granada (years 75-80, I think) both offered 9-inch rears as options. Look under these cars. They are plentiful in junkyards. These cars are, very simply put, stretched Mavericks underneath. Many little changes, but the rear suspension is the same. Most V8 cars came with 8-inchs, but had a 9-inch as an option. Many sixes came with 8-inchs. I've heard that you could option a 6cyl with a 9-inch, but dont bet on it. To tell a 9-inch from an 8-inch, look for the pinion input shaft. On 9-inches the webbing descends just below the bottom of the rearend itself. (The case webbing is the lowest part of the assembly) 8-inches do not.
These cars had optional Traction-Lok, but the gears were always from 3.00 to 2.50. count on buying a new pumpkin case.
You should be able to put the big strong 9-inch in for a total of less than $600, parts, seals, & all. you can even use the brake drums off your car's 8-inch, if it was a V8
