Ball Joints revisited

I called for a couple of quotes today for repalcing the ball joints
in my 73.(302)
The answers I am getting are that the lower control arm/ball joint is
one assembly. $93 and up each!

I can't do the job myself (currently an apt dweller), and I recall this
subject as having been discussed.

Has anyone ACTUALLY DONE the job, and can the lowers be replaced?
