Cross-over pipe

I'm starting to get some estimates for an exhaust system for my '72 302. How important is it to get the cross-over between the two sides on a dual exhaust system? I know it will equalize the pressure between the two, but what will that do for me? Whats a good price for a full 2 1/4" exhaust?
