Just jack the rearend up, try spinning a tire, if they both spin the same direction, you have posi, if they spin opposite directions, its an open diff.
Although spools are cheap, don't buy one if you do a lot of street driving, my buddy has a mini spool in his '69 Ranchero, and you can literally see the inside tire hopping off the ground when he takes a turn, also very bad for leaf springs too.
I'd recommend an Auburn pro series cone/clutch for 8" Ford rearends, (got one in my stang, the clutches are really tight, it skids just slightly when taking a turn) bad thing is they cost about $300, but most any posi does, also you could try finding a Ford Traction-Lok unit from the junkyard, and getting new clutches for it.
and don't forget to pick up some Ford friction modifier (about $5) from the ford dealer to mix with your gear oil, so the clutches don't chatter.
