: Changed the fluid and filter last weekend and my Chilton's said put in 5 quarts, then check it. It was overful. I later read it again and it said 5 quarts for a full service (lines, converter, etc.) and 3 quarts for just the pan. So I figure its about two quarts overful. Took it for a test drive and the excess is draining off onto the tailpipe which makes for a pretty cool effect. My question is, am I ok to let it drain itself off? Will it do any damage?

I was told by a mechanic when he was checking out a car for my girlfriend that it was VERY BAD to overfill the tranny (it had a transmission leak). He was referring to a '69 Ford Fairlane Cobra with, I'm sure, a different tranny, but I would assume that it still applies. I'm certainly no expert, but I wouldn't risk it. Transmission work is too expensive.
