I believe the colors correspond to the colors listed on the build sheet. If you look at a build sheet, it has actual "colors" listed in various areas on the build sheet. For example, if you look at "front springs" on the build sheet, it might just say "Orange". the person on the assembly line would look at the build sheet, see it said orange, and reach over and grab springs with an orange dab of paint on them. this made it a lot faster and easier to build cars back then. if you have a build sheet for a car, it makes it alot easier to restore your car back with all the correct "paint dabs".

Hope this helps.

: Ron,

: I just knew you'd be the man for the job! I'll email you with my request later on! Thanks so much for this info!!!!!!
: Sam :)

: : Ford produced it for "us" (the Master Parts Catalog, to which I have access on a 'time permitting' basis). The spring listing is about three pages long (8.5x11 front and back) and I'm not about to write it out...maybe you could narrow your(my) search down a little...do you mean Mav/Comet springs only? Feel free to Email me with your "requests".
: : BTW, I'm not all THAT smart, I just know where to find the info from my 20+ year infatuation(affliction?) with Mavericks/Comets and other assorted 'Blue Oval' products. Currently in the driveway (or garage):'65 F100 Camper Special (CA lic.= R DYNASR), '66 Mustang Coupe, '73 Maverick 2dr (the "Hot Rod"), '74 Maverick Grabber (the "Grabber"), and my wife's "truck" ('90 Nissan King Cab).

: : : I just read a good piece of detective work on here as far as understanding the meaning of all those rear-end codes. Now lets see if some smart person can come up with some front spring codes as well. Recently I was looking at a pair of front springs that came out of a '72 comet six cylinder, and noticed that there were peach or orange colored paint daubs on each of the coils. Thinking back, I recall different colors on other springs that I've seen in the past. I know that the different colors indicate a differt spring rate / application. Can anybody produce a list of these color codes?
