The lowest stock final-drive ratio in a '72 Maverick was 3.00:1. The way to find out the ratio without tearing apart the rear-end is to look on the inside door jam where there is a sticker called the Vehical Certification Label with different codes printed on it. If the axel code is a "6" then it's a 3.00:1 ratio. If it's a "3" then it's a 2.79:1 ratio. Tire size will also affect cruising RPMs. I have 3.55:1 gears in my '73 C-4 302 and at 65mph the tach shows 3000 RPM...

: My '72 Maverick 302 must have really low rear-end gears because at 65 mph on the freeway the car winds-out pretty good. I don't have a tach but would estimate between 3,000-3,500 rpm. Is there a way to find out what the ratio is without tearing it apart? How hard is it to swap the gears out? Right now I think my City mpg may be better than my Hwy mpg.
: Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
