Carb hook-up

I just bought a new Carter four bbl carb for a 302 that i'm sticking in my mav. But I've run into a few problems...bear with me this is my first build up. First, the throttle linkage connected to the old carb on the old engine like a trailer hitch...there was this little ball thing that the linkage slipped over. the problem is that there is no ball thing on the Carter carb...how do I make the connection. Second, although I will probably fiigure it out after a while, I'm having trouble figuring out where the hell all the vacuum lines need to run and how the run there...any ideas or sources of info would really...really help
