First gear slips

I have a 1973 Mav 2-door with a 250 CID I6 automatic and am having problems with first gear. If I accelerate, the engine will rev but it won't pop into gear for about 1.5 seconds. Does anyone know what could be wrong with Junior?
The other gears are okay.
