1. Look at the brake pedal pad. If it is worn through, it may indicate that the car has 168,000
2. Check to see if the doors sag a lot when they hang wide open.
These are definetly not technical ways to tell but it may help. Have it checked out by a mechanic. Also, $1,200 seems a bit steep for a 4-door.

: someone please help me out here! I have located a 1974
: Mercury Comet 4-door sedan, that has 68,000
: original miles from one owner, or so I am told. I saw the
: beast and took it for a spin, it appeared to be in good
: condition and ran very nicely. The seller, who took it off a
: dealership lot that was not interested in it when it was
: traded in, is convinced that this car will run forever
: and give me few problems. My father, who is footing the
: for my first car, is skeptical of the mileage and the car's
: dependability. Both of us know nothing about Comets, is
: this a risky propostion? the seller is asking $1200 for
: the car, is this reasonable? The seller is also willing
: to let us take the car to get it checked out by a mechanic,
: is there any way of telling for sure the real mileage?
: any help answering these troubling, globally important
: questions would be much appreciated.

: thanks!! matt.
