They don't stay on all the time, although they have power all the time- there is a mercury switch that turns them on when the hood or trunk is opened. The mercury rolls down because of gravity and completes the circuit. Obviously, its important that you mount them correctly -CP

: I have a factory set up in my 77 parts car which will end up in my other 77. They were part of a convenience lighting option which included a glove box light, hood light, trunk light, ash try light & over head map lights incorporated into the dome light. The wiring harness plugs up the glove box light, trunklight, & map/dome lights. The standard wiring in the car already has a plug for the ash tray light. The hood light is a single wire harness with a fusable link which hooks to the battery side of the starter solinoid. I didnt check them out before i pulled them but it appears that the hood and trunk light stay on all the time.
