...when I pulled my heads to put the motor in my current Mav, it had about 40000 miles on the motor. The pistons looked brand new. Just had a little buildup on the valve stems inside the chamber. I didn't use any kind of coating.
I was looking at the coating stuff that is in the new Hot Rod mag. They talk about piston coatings, and head chamber costings, not to mention the headers. I've hear of ceramic cylinder walls being used to cut down on friction, and motorcycles using dry coatings for lubricating ability.
Just figured that I'd see what everyone has tried, or heard.
Thanks!!!
: I don't know of any coatings for pistons, etc (probably not worth the expense), but I used Glyptal in my engine for the cast surfaces that aren't exposed to combustion. The coating is water & oil -proof. You brush it on all the cast surfaces to make them non-porous. This keeps
oil from soaking in and making sludge. Also helps oil drain back into the oil pan faster. Don't use it on machined surfaces as it will not stick (and isn't necessary, anyway). After 28k I pulled my valve covers & oil pan and it looks like brand new. Eastwood Company sells the stuff -CP
: : Anyone look into doing some engine coatings? I know that I can send my hedman headers back to be coated, but has anyone done pistons and valve chambers? Any suggestions on who is the highest quality?
