You are right the 2 are different sizes but you must remember the T5 comes off of a 302 if you use the T5 bell housing you will not have a problem, if you try to use the T10 bell housing with the T5 you will have a lot of problems. You can use the top loader bell housing with the T5 but you need an adapter plate to make up for the spaceing differences and the input shaft length differences.
: about a couple of months ago i rebuilt my buddy's T5 & while it was out I put it next to my T10. The overall input shaft is 9/16" longer than the T10. The bellhousing was 9/16" deeper to make up the difference. I was trying to figure out how to put a t5 in an older 302 but figured it was more than i wanted to do at this time
