The EFI systems are better on the Mustangs, if you are going the EFI route.
Performance-wise, the cylinder heads & compression ratio really make the engine. 289 heads are good because the have a small combustion chamber, making the CR lower. 70's and early 80's 302s had real low compression, like 8.0:1. The 302 HO's had higher than that, depending on the year.
I am sure other people know more about the 302 changes than I do, but the 60's and 90's 302s are the best. the 90's 302s can use the roller cams, another bonus. -CP

: : EFI is pricey and timeconsuming, but probably worth it if you drive the car a lot. it gives you better mileage and driveablity than a carb. Carbs work great, though. The 1980s 302s aren't particularly suited to performance use, at least no more than the late 1970s 302s. The EFI on a Crown Vic is not the EFI you would want to use on a Maverick, as it is not mass air. You'd want a Mustang EFI setup. Along with that you'd need a 351W or 302 HO cam to change the firing order.
: : I would like to change to EFI someday, but the bang for the buck is in carbs, at least for now. CP

: which 302's are the ones that are better suited to performance use?
: like from which cars, which years??

: : : couriosity questions here guys... combing the junkyard, i found 2 302s (not from mavs or stangs though), both in pretty good condition. one was from an 80's LTD (i think), it was a standard carburator engine. another was a late 80's crown victoria, it was a 5.0 FI engine. i know they make TONS of performance parts for the 302, but which is the way to go, carburator or FI? thanks guys.
