: I'm in the process of rebuilding my tranny, it's a 1970 c4 automatic. I have the tranny almost completely apart, but now that i look at the thrust washers it looks like they may need replacing too....they're worn down to the copper--does that mean anything? or are they normally copper? I know that when an engine bearing wears down to the copper it needs replacing...but it also looks like the washers might have a little wear left in them.

: Thanks for any info!
: Also...let me know if there's some other thigns to keep an eye out for...

the coloring of the thrust washers are normal. endplay should be .008" to .042". Keep everything hospital clean as ford govener assemblies are extreamly sensitive to dirt and will cause shift problems. also note the the direction the primary throttle valve behind the modulator it will go in both directions but the trans will only shift if it is installed correctly. the end with the hole the same size as the modulator rod goes into the case.
