this is my 2nd V8 maverick. ive had several small block equipped fords too. (not to mention friends)
i went with the edel/sm edel carb. combo because i have all stock components, otherwise. (stock cam, ignition, single exhaust. etc) the engine is relatively fresh, and does not need a "going thru" for a long time. (cant afford it anyway)

my last maverick was not stock. it had a cam, electronic ignition, duals, etc..
believe it or not, my new maverick would probably give the old one a hard time, if i were able to race them.

but my last maverick had 3 different carbs on it, before i settled on a 500cfm edelbrock.
i started with a carter 625cfm- it ran rough, hesitated, and leaked at the throttle shaft. somehow, the throttle shaft got bent, but that was probably my fault.
i then got a holley #1850 (600cfm) oddly enough, this carb offered the best gas mileage, and probably the most "kick" when i got into it.
however, it too was unreliable. about 1 in every 5 attempts, the auto-trans-kickdown would actually work. and if it didnt, the car badly fell on it face. but when it did kick....
whoa nellie!! it was sweet.
however, i think the holley is a piece of $#!+.
hard to tune, wont stay tuned, tempermental (weather really made readjustment necessary, EVERY time the weather changed.)
i eventually ended up with the 500cfm. and you are right, the fuel economy isnt a great as you would hope for. BUT, the strip kit makes jetting and metering rod changes a breeze. you should be able to dial it in pretty good.
i know my car had enough guts to require a 600cfm, but the 500 never missed a beat. the kickdown worked 100% of the time, i had a silky smooth idle, and i wasnt constantly trying to keep it tuned.
the car was plenty fast, although it could have been faster, had i wanted to make sacrifices. i did not.
reliability is much more important to me than my 1/4 mile ET.

in finishing... i guess any 4V from 390cfm to 625 can be made to work acceptably.

but in my opinion, ive got the best possible hook up for a stock engine.
