Jeri, let us know what engine you have in the car, maybe someone close can help.
Here are some things that often are problems. Oil press. to low, causes rod and main bearings to rattle when starting up. Piston skirts stating to colapse or cracked piston, will bang when engine is cold and may or maynot subside when engine heats up to operating temp.
On a piston defect like that if engine is run to long the piston can break up in the cylinder then the rod flails back and forth against the cylinder wall and their is high liklyhood that a cracked block is the result then its scrap time for the engine. Valve lifters
starved for oil pressure will clatter and tick etc.
I know its not encourging! as you wanted some advice. Our 302 engines in the seventies are prone to piston problems like I stated so its always wise to replace them on a rebuild.
The best to you.
Ken
