Another thing to look for is the rivets used to connect the VIN plate to the dashboard. The ones used to rivet the vin plate to the dash have kind of a "flower" pattern as opposed to plain round.
A few years back I installed A/C on my '77 Maverick and I replaced the entire dash with one from the A/C donor car. Trouble was, this new dash had the old VIN plate from the donor car. I wanted to put the correct vin plate on the dash...I didn't like the idea of having a car with the wrong VIN on it.
Fortunately my father was able to get me some of the special rivets so the VIN plate wouldn't look like it didn't belong there.
I don't remember where he got the rivets...I think he got them at work..he worked for GM at the time...
