: everytime i snug up the bellhousing bolts to the engine on my 302/c4, something binds up, locking up the engine/TQ convertor. when i back off the bolts, i can turn the engine over easily by hand. flexplate nuts are on fine. any ideas?

Did you make sure too fully seat the torque converter? Is the 302 from a previous manual transmission combination and it still has the pilot bearing in it? Is the spacer plate installed between the engine and the tranny? Is this of any help? Also you say the flexplate nuts are on fine , on a ford you should always tighten the bellhousing bolts before the torque converter nuts so you don't unseat the converter. Good Luck
