As far as I know, there are TWO different 8" third members. The early case is the thinner casting and the later case is the thicker one. Look at the third member when it's bolted to the housing. I don't know the exact thicknesses, but I think the early cases were around 1/2" thick. The later cases were at least the thickness of a 9". I don't remember exactly what year Ford started to use the later case. I do know that our '71 (was 250/C4 w/4-lug axles) came with the thicker case.
