is it the car or the engine??

I was just playing with some new ideas for my mav. stuff like taking a new 4.6dohc engine and swapping it. or a 80's 5.0 and using that. But i dont want to be restricted by a catalytic converter (i like dual exhaust to much :) so that leads to my question. Is it the car that requires the cat?? or is it the engine??? thanks guyz.
