: I've been talking to a friend with a machine shop about making new z-bars. He's interested, so I took a look at the bar I have and at the Ford 1974 Chassis shop manual, Page 16-03-4. I'd been told by another Mav owner about the 2 piece bushing and retaining clip needed on the engine mounted pivot, but I'm confused about the diagram which seems to show a second bushing (no. 7k530)on the same side. This bushing is the same as the one on the frame side, which is much more readily available than the two piece bushing. Am I reading this diagram wrong? If not, why are there two bushings on one side? In any case, can anyone think of a good reason why we couldn't make the new z-bar to accept the same bushing as the Mustang, on the engine side? This would make it a lot easier to obtain the bushings, since, as far as I know, the only way to get the two piece bushing is from Perogie Enterprises and they charge $38.00 for it! Any advice about how to improve the design in the making of new bars would be helpful, hopefully to many, as we hope to knock off a few and make them availble to others. Thanks. John B.
Boy, can I open a can of worms or what? First thanks to all for the responses, info, and advice! It's been a busy weekend, and I've come up with some new (?) info. First, John B, the part 7k530 is a grease seal - it looks like a felt washer. The complete # is D1DZ-7K530-A. Second, Blown 5.0, thanks for the heads up on Green Sales. It didn't pan out. (I was too late!) Third, Charlie, cool site! The diagrams have proven quite helpful! Gypsy Jim, lets talk! I had access to an original 1971 assembly manual over the weekend and have part #s if anyone needs 'em.
1. Z-bar (top half) D1DZ-7528-A
2. Z-bar (bottom half) D1DZ-7528-B
3. Frame bracket D1DZ-7A531-A
4. Engine bracket D1DZ-7A531-A Note: 7A531 superceded by 7507
5. Ball pivot C5AZ-7543-C
I hope to be able to post a copy of the assembly manual page in a week or two. (I didn't want to push my luck with the guy who let me look at his books!) Came across a good site for NOS parts. Go to midlandautomotive.com Click "shop online" and scroll down to "clutch & transmission" Once I get this z-bar thing straightened out I'll post diagrams, measurements, angles, modifications for strength, pics and anything else I can as a thank you to all you guys for your help. I already have a commitment from a friend to fabricate a "severe duty" z-bar if I bring him a sample. As a bonus, he started his racing carreer in a 1970 Mav. with a Boss 302 & 4-speed! He knows the weak spots and how to make 'em indestructible! Gypsy Jim, your hydraulic clutch idea would work I'm sure! There's a bit of a problem in my case, though. To my knowledge, no one makes the hydraulic bearing for a big input toploader. (Yep, that's what's goin' in!) Anyway, thanks again to all, and I hope that at least some of this info is helpful!
