Make your own pointer or go to a junk yard & get one. After you've got one mounted, pull #1 plug & put your finger in the plug hole. Bring it around till you feel compression. Slip a long thin (about 12") rod into hole & slowly bring it around till the rod stops moving. This will be TDC. Take white paint & paint a thin line on the balancer under your pointer. Now you have a reference for TDC. Use a timming light with the dial advance feature in it & you will be able to get within a few degrees of where you need to be. Also get yourself a dwell meter & set your pionts with it instead of feeler gauges. It is much more accurate. Dwell for a 302 is 28 to 32 degrees. With the cap off & the coil disconnected you can set it while the engine is cranking. Set it for the upper side cause the reading usually drops a few degrees when running. Set dwell first, then timming.
