Balancers and Distributors

I have been researching harmonic balancers and I am unsure of a few things. First, is a '77 302 internally or externally balanced? Second, how big is the stock balancer? All the catalogs show a 6 5/8" size, is that correct? I figured I could do the reasearch on the bolts for the pulleys, ( I have four ) but the rest seems rather imparative to determine before hand.

Second topic: Is a vacuum advance distributor better than a mechanical advance? I would like to try a mechanical advance but I know very little about them. I don't want to get stuck with a distributor that I can't use because I didn't do my homework.
