the real reason for Dist. ignition is for accuracy. you don't have as many moving parts influencing the timing. The oil pump is the big HP drain, big pumps with lots of pressure and volume can use 5-15 horses just to spin them. So does thick oil. Just try it some time using hot and cold oil, but it in the freezer overnight, against room temp and spin the pump drive by hand. Oil pump "chatter" will also effect your timing. The reason for "exterial" (racing types)oil pumps is they're usually three-five pumps there for a dry sump system.
: I am wondering if anyone knows of anyone making a distributorless ignition system for the 302. I think this would free up a very minut amount of power, but hey every little bit counts. I also assume doing this would require some sort of mod., like setting up an exterior oil pump. Any info appreciated.
