: Can anyone outline the process to replace valve seals on a '71 302. Car smokes when started and clears up after. Replacing the valve seals should correct this condition? What else needs to replaced while the valvetrain is apart. Where is a good place to get these seals?
: Any help is appreciated.
: Thanks,

Are you going to remove the heads? Seals can be replaced with them on but is not the best way if the engine has a lot of miles. Seals can be gotten at most auto supply stores, they also come with gasket sets. To change them with heads on you will need an air compressor and spark plug adapter. Bring piston on each cyl. being changed to top dead center on compression stroke, hook air hose to plug adapter. This will hold valves up while compressing spring and removing keepers. Install new seal and reinstall spring and keepers. Use some vasaline to hold keeper on valve stem when releasing spring compressor. Just take your time and inspect all your parts as you go. There are two types of seals, use the umbrella type for ease of installation and will be just fine for a street motor. Good luck and let us know if you get it done.
