'73 Maverick 250 six lifter info/text & pictures or manual

I recently removed the head. While putting it back together I could not seat on the pushrods into the lifter. It appears that the lifter has collapsed. My Ford manual does not explain fully how to replace them or even remove them. I have taken the head back off and am told that the liffters should be able to be removed from above. How. Do I need a special tool or can I improvise. Th vehicle has only 83,000 miles, should all the lifters be checked and how. I noticed three of the pushrods were nurled by the rocker and replaced the pushrods. I would appreciate any help that might be available.
