Hey John,
I've had an engine in the shed at my Mom's house for about 5 years, I removed the Spark plugs and put about an ounce of motor oil in each cylinder, then replaced the plugs. Once or twice a year I'll remove the plugs and spin the engine buy hand, then add a little oil again and replace the plugs ( always remove the plugs to releive any pressure) Also keep it wrapped plastic to keep it dry. Now this engine is sitting on the ground, but its best to have it on a stand (around $80.00 at Princess Auto in London) I have also taped up all the openings with duct tape.
