:Fastman, I've heard the same thing about 86 HO's but I can't figure out why everyone says that. It has to be in the upper and lower intakes. I found that the 86 and 91 HO motors have the very same E7 heads (I have sets from both and they are the same). So the difference must be in the cam and intake. The pistons are the same as well. Therefore, if one wants to use the 86 roller block with a carb they would have the same motor as the newer blocks unless the cam is substantially different. Any thoughts?

I have to agree with your first thought. I suspect the upper/lower EFI intakes to be the main downfall of the 86 H.O. They may just restrict the engine a little more than the 85 carb. intake or the 87 EFI manifold. I do believe the cam is the same when comparring the 85-87 though. So again, my guess is intake as well. But as you stated, going with a carb manifold would most likely bring up the perf. to the 85's specs.
