:jeri, Welcome again to Web Garage. Here are your answers and advice.
1.Hard start when hot: The fuel is actually boiling in the carb and spills into the engine and causing a flooding condition on hot restart. This is common with Ford cars of the 70s. What to do about it,well not much unless an electric fan is mounted in front of the radiator with a thermostat that lets the fan run awhile after engine shut down. When starting, push gas al the way down and hold it there till the engine fires enough to run the let up. What this does is allow air to enter and lean out the excess fuel that has accumulitated and fouled the plugs. (Is why no start when hot).
2.Oil pressure. Your in fine shape as discribed. There are three reasons the pressure acts as it does. One is oil viscosity or weight (10w30,10w40)etc. The higher the larger number the heavier. This makes the oil pump work harder on a cold engine to pump oil to a limit pressure set by a spring loaded bypass valve in the pump. As the oil heats it thins and causes the drop in oil pressure you see because the pump (at idle) is not able to keep up the 60 psi due to its slower operation, lower thickness of the oil and easier escapement around all bearing areas,ie rod/main/cam/hydralic lifters etc. Now it can be seen why, when oil pump is worn, bearings worn that oil pressure will go down.
3.Cooling: Don't overfill the radiator. There needs to be some area left for expansion of the fluid as liquids donot compress. If theres no room left it will push pass the cap and into the holding jug or be lossed all over the engine if no jug is used. It is normal that the jug will be up to a half full. This is a back and forth action with cooldown the radiator will draw some back into the system.
Make sure the cap is a at least 14lbs and good. Thermostat for summer I would use about 175 degree and use lesser amount of antifreeze in summer just enough to lube the water pump and to raise the boiling point for the coolant. Be sure to refill for freeze protection in the fall.
And now for the Bill. Put the check in the mail. I need another coffee after this. Hope Iv'e made sense of this for you.
My best wishes, Ken
