:Would a phenolic carb spacer help...
...Spacer would help somewhat as well as a shield but most likly not eliminate the problem completly.
...The center two exhaust ports on each bank has runners that feed into the stock iron intake manifold then up to a plate for the EGR function. This is a source of carb heating for cold weather starting as well as emissions control. Unfortunatly this helps create the summertime hard starting problem as well as does the high engine bay temperature after shutdown.
...Probabily the best help for this is to block off these ports at the manifold, rendering the EGR function inoperative and lowering the heating effects and using heat reducing measures between the carb and manifold along with an electric fan with control to move the heat out after shutdown.
...Be awhere that the engine will now exhibit (cold bloodedness)in cold weather with harder starting and warmup before driveaway and may need the automatic choke adjusted richer to help and making sure it opens when engine is up to operating temp.
...Sometimes the automatic choke adjustment in not allowing the plate to fully open or goes back to a partly close position after heat soak subsides just when it's not needed.
...While the engine is running and pulling outside air into the engine bay, the peak temp. is kept below the boiling point of the fuel so no problem.
...So much for 1970s engineering!!!!
