:I have a 351W that is going into a '70 Mav. The original C4 that came out of the car was of course, hooked up to a 250 I6. The I6 flexplate has a 10 1/2" torque converter bolt patern. The 351W has a 11 7/16" torque converter bolt pattern and so the C4 bell housing will not fit over the larger 351W flexplate.
:
:My question is (if it is even the right thing to ask) can I put the smaller flexplate on the 351W or will that cause problems with the starter, or, should I look for a bell housing that will fit over the 11 7/16" flexplate?
The other fellows are right, donot change. You need to consider changing to a V8 type C4 trans, then there's no problem. But due pay attention to the number of teeth in the flexplate to match the starter drive gear.
