:Before all these swaps became popular I did my first one back in 92. I used 302 headers and had to "modify" them a little.
: The spark plugs aren't that bad to change out. I think you people have been spoiled working on 4&6 bangers. Live with it. Can't have your cake and eat it too. If you think the plugs are hard to change on this swap, go look at the plugs on the BB Stangs and early Fairlanes. There is some tricks that make it easier. Like using a 6" vacuum hose on the tip of plug to start it into the head, Then tighten it. If you want it to be easy, then you're in the wrong hobby field. Try changing a little bulb on your dash sometime. And headers will fit on the drivers side with out lifting the engine. Mind over matter. : : : ::I have read many of the posts about the 351W swap into the mav. There seems to be differing opinions on how well it fits. My questions are, can you change plugs and install headers on the 351W installed in a mav without any mods to the shock towers. Someone posted some nice pics of modified towers but I was just wondering if that was really necessary for the 351W swap! Isn't there a company that makes 351W swap headers for the Maverick already? If this is so, why would any shock tower mods need to be accomplished? I have personally thought about the 351W swap many times and the only thing that stops me is the problem with getting a 5 spd. trans to bolt up with headers in the way. Can anyone confirm if a Tremec 5 spd. will fit if used with the 351W and headers? This to me is the "ultimate" Maverick! And to thos of you who say "stroke it". I agree to an extent, but there are some problems with the 347 stroker that many aren't aware of. Possible oil consuption problems and the biggest issue, cylinder wall side loading. The side loading problem will shorten the engine life because the cyl. walls and pistons will wear much faster than the stock stroke 302. So my advice on stroking a 302 for "street/strip" use is to go no larger than a 331 if you intend on having an engine that lasts well over 100k miles. If you seek a full race engine, then go for the 347. I would rather have the 351 one very good reason, a stroker as well! Sure I am concerned with side loading but a 351 can be made into a 408 and does not contribute as much side loading on it's cylinders as the 347/302. And a 525 HP 408 is much more streetable than a 347 producing 525 HP. Take this as my opinion, nothing more. |
