M II or Pinto spindles would be tough to bolt to a Maverick without changing the suspension completely to M II. They are just completly wrong: height, steering inclination, ball joint angles. And you are right about the crossmember. Even if you put one in to mount the front steer rack from an MII, you would have to install a new oil pan and pick up as well to clear it. The M II suspension can be adapted, but not by simply bolting on spindles.

There are cars with conventional rear steer racks though. Most FWD Mopars are rear steer (Sebring, Daytona, Omni, K-car), FWD GM W-bodies like the Grand Prix, lumina, etc., and FWD Fords like Taurus, Tempo, and Escort. With a suitable bracket, they might be acceptable.

A few moths ago there was an article about a guy who used a Taurus rack on a 68 Mustang. And there's a page on the web showing a Chrysler rack going into an early Falcon. I'll see if I can find it.
