Generally, when I had this problem(air blowing only thru the defroster vents) it was because there was something wrong with the main vacuum supply line to the heater/AC system...look for a pinched, disconnected or damaged vacuum line coming out near the passenger side firewall.
Also, it could be a leaky vacuum canister..they are made of steel and if it rusts or otherwise gets a hole in it, that could be the culprit. The purpose of this canister is so that under heavy acceleration,when engine vacuum is lowest,the AC/heater doors don't start changing position. If you run without this canister,or have one that isn't working properly you will notice that when you really step on it, most of the air will start coming out of the defrost vents until you let up on the throttle...and then it returns to where it is supposed to be coming out...but I digress...;) Hope this helps!
