air only blows through defrost vents

trying to get my maverick ready for winter, and to be a better equipped daily driver.
my car is equipped with AC. however, it does not work.
im just wondering if mavericks are notorious for having vent/vacuum line related problems?
my last maverick also only blew air through the defrost ducts.
nothing comes out through or beneath the dash vents.
someone told me that my last maverick only blew through the defrost, cuz i had removed the AC. i question that, as the AC and everything else, is intact on my new maverick.

can someone tell me what to look for to correct my ducting problem? is it a plenum or a vaccum related problem?
what should i look for?

also, it does not blow heat either. i am going to replace or install a new thermostat. it may not have one in it.
any ideas why the heater wouldnt work? the heater core has not been by-passed.
