The clips fit into a recess on the cable outer sheeting. There is a metal area that is recessed that takes the clips.

Your timing is correct....install the speaker while the heater box it out.
The hole is just below the pulley for the brake handle. The hole is sort of parallel and horizontal to the ground, not vertical like the firewall.
