There's 2 filters if im not mistaken, one in the tank attached to the fuel sending unti and one at the carb. Best thing to do is get a cheap tach...
Whats the timing set too? It sounds like its running too fast in park. What are the rpm's at in park?
It does look a little funky without the ac compressor there and just the alternator. Would be a good place to mount a turbo!:D

You can leave the alternator in the same place, just get smaller belts.

If it's not rebuilt I wouldnt push it passed 4500rpm's
What year 302 is it and what did it come out of? I can tell you what RPM you should set it too.
