    NO

Even the pistons are the same!
The shorter crank throw is offset by longer rods. Therefore same pistons.

289s have a 3 bolt ballencer and 302s have a 4 bolt ballencer for the acc pullies. Maybe some early 68 302s had 3 bolt, sence both were made in 68, but but not many.

Thats about the only way to tell from the outside other than date codes.

Yeah, 302s used 3 bolts until 69... They also used passenger side water pumps through 69. However, this stuff is so very easily interchanged it doesn't constitute much of a difference. You can look at just about any year small block and find differeces if you take every little thing into account.

Yeah i thought that was wrong, someone told me you could see the threads on the front intake bolts, but on the 302 you could only see the hex part. But when i took a look on at my grandfathers 302 i could also see the threads.

Yeah, that's what I meant.

On 260s and very early 289s the heads did not meet the intake at the four corner bolts, there was a gap and you could see the threads between the intake and the head. Wasn't bad with cast iron intakes but when guys tried to install aluminum intakes they often cracked the corners because the head didn't provide any support there.
