My opinion, which is based on my experience. I have had 4.88's, 4.56's, 4.11's and now 3.25's in mine. Get the gear that is best for highway driving! I have for years slowly been getting my car back to street duty and everytime I take a step closer to that goal, it involves a gear change. Yeah, yeah its cool to have the acceleration at the stop light, but 3.80's compared to 3.55's is not that much difference.......but I can promise you the droan, wear and tear of 400-500 more rpm on the highway after 50-60's miles is huge! The minimal benefits of 3.80's for a couple trips to the track is not worth it! And IMO if your running a c4, 3.55's are too much. BEEN THERE DONE THAT!
Hrm, I guess the 3.70s behind a 390 FE and a C6 was stupid then??? I wouldn't drive it on the freeway, but it did highway driving at 55+ very easily and didn't turn that monster to hard. It also depends on your tire size, in which i had a 28'' tall tire
i vote 3.27. thats what i have in my sn95 t5 with gt40 heads and intake. i promise u i have no issue with my launch or boiling the tires down to the belts
Hey, starsky, good to see you finally woke up after a year and some months!!! I would hate to see your reaction times at the track... j/k, of course.
I originally voted 3.55 when this pole first came out and when I had my 72 Gran Torino Sport, my 9 inch had 3.50 gears in an open rear. It worked great throughout the range of the stock CJ Cleveland using a toploader. Now that the whole Torino drivetrain is in my Maverick but now the Cleveland is stroked to 393, I bought a set of 3.89 gears to better assist the cam and the dual quads and added a Traction Loc.
what ever gear's you want make sure to get the posi setup to i got a t5 12 pound aluminum flywheel open 3.25 gears 9'' and it spins the crap out of my 275/50/17's all the way in 1st gear i want 3.89's with posi so i think that 3.80 with a c4 it would be winding that motor on the freeway
I run C4 with 3.80 and spool. It isn't really that bad. Yes, we are spoiled with 1800 rpm cruising with overdrive newer vehicles, but 3000 on highway isn't all that bad once you get used to it. Gas mileage is still pretty good, right at 20 mpg.
I run 3:55 with my C-4. Great all around gear. My car is driven daily. Plus when I get the bug for speed, I take it down the 1/4 mile with great results. Remember, I drive it to the track, race & drive it home.. No Trailer Queen here...
I agree. If u were just going to use the car mostly for racing and maybe short cruises to cruise nite than the 4, and high 3 series gearing the way to go. I suppose it comes down to what compromises in driveline wear, noise and fuel consumption ur willing to tolerate. If ur running a 351W I wud think the 3.55 wud be more than enough for reasonable compromise.
