Darracq, I will gladly take any help that I can get, so find me a cam. What do you think about the herbert solid cams that I have listed? I still need to make a choice by friday to either use a 331 or a 347. I can also change the gear to a .380 if needed instead of the 4.30 or 4.62 whatever is in it now. Thanks Steve
Cam I looked though a bunch of cams and most of them are to big. Im guessing you going to build a 347 with 10.1 compression or so. That 234/244 wouldnt be to bad if they will grind it on a 110sa, It has a little more advertized duration than i would like. The comp 282s is a pretty good cam also. I have seen some quality problems with there roller cams but they seem to run pretty good. I think you would be very happy with either one of the cams. When you really want to go fast, put a set of AFR 185s on victor jr heads on it and hold on. My friend has a 302 with victor jrs and a herbert roller cam 4.88 gears and it screams. Low 11s at least.
I'm running a herbert cam and am very happy with it.......i've been told that if you are going to spin one over 7500 rpm's to stay away from his lifters........
Thanks, I am looking at mechanical tappet, solid lift cams. Do comp cams make very many mechanical cams? Thanks Steve
RE They make a few, but the 282s is the only one i think would work good for you, They have a 280/284 242/246@50 .541 .522. its on a 106lsa It would be a real thumper. I would run that cam if you want to get the compression up to 11.1 and run the 4.62 gears. Might need some good gas though.
Thank you guys, Would a lsa of 106 be good. Or should I use 110,112,114. The reason I ask is that I will probably be using a 100 shot of nitrous so that maybe I can get in the 11 second range. I will be using some kind of aftermarket heads, I sold the ported windsor heads because everyone said that they will not be near as good as aftermarket heads. Does anyone know anything about roush 200 heads? Thanks Steve.
Re 106lsa will work with nitrous. You dont need a nitrous cam unless your going to shoot over a 200 shot. Im sure they will grind the cam on a 108 or 110 though. I think 108 would be perfect. As long as you have some good compression. I would not get the roush heads either. PUt a set of Victro jrs on it, There only a few hundred more than the roush heads and will blow them away. On a 347 you will be in the 11s on the motor EASY, Thats what heads my buddy has on a 302 and he has plenty of low end with 3500 stall. Take it from me do it right the first time and you will be VERY happy you did.
i would put a 393 stroker in it with 10.8-1 comp with a comp cams 35-427 its 110 LS 242 intake 248 exh @050 with 576 on the intake 600 on the exh with a set of AFR 185s if it was me then you should be in the 11s easy
FIRST i WOULD LIKE TO SAY i TOTALLY DISAGREE WITH SOME OF THE POST MADE HERE. mY CAR IS 2750 ME IN IT, 10.4TO 1 COMP E303 HYD ROLLER CAM roush HEADS UNPORTED 3.80 GEARS HAS RUN A BEST OF 11.87 @119MPH. bIG CAMS MEAN SHIT ITS ALL IN THE HEADS. tHE CREAM OF THE CROP SEEM TO BE THE AFR HEADS. i CANNOT COMPLAIN ABOUT MY ROUSH HEADS THOUGH. iF YOU RUN BIG VALVES KEEP THE COMPRESSION UP 10 TO 10.5 TO 1. aLUMINUM WILL ALLOW YOU ANOTHER POINT OR SO.hoWEVER IRON HEADS MAKE MORE POWER IF ALL THINGS ARE EQUAL. tAKE THE E303 CA, FOR EXAMPLE .498 LIFT BOTH SIDES 282 DURATION LOW 220 @.500 LIFT DURATION NOT A BIG CAM BUT IT WORKS IF MATCHED WITH THE PROPER COMPONENTS. mY STALL SPEED IS 2500. wITH OUT SLICKS i CAN RUN 12.40S ALL DAY. mY CAR IDLES GREAT NEVER STALLS OR BUCKS AND FIRES UP THE FIRST CRANK. i RUN A 625 ROAD DEMON AS WELL. BIG CARBS ARE NOT NEEDED UNLESS YOU ARE WINDING THE RPMS A HUGE AMOUNT. i PULL TO 6500RPM. THAT IS ALL YOU NEED IF YOU PLAN EVERYTHING AHEAD OF TIME. i HAVE YET TO SEE THE OLDER EDELBROCK HEADS OUTPERFORM THE AFR OR THE ROUSH 200s. eDEELBROCK HAS RECENTELY UPDATED THERE HEADS SO THEY MAY DO BETTER THAN THE 200S BUT THE AFRS OUTPERFORM ALL FORD HEADS FOR THE 302 OR 351. THE 331 STROKER SEEMS TO WORK GREAT. i WISH i HAD BUILT ONE. iF YOU GO TO 347 YOU MIGHT AS WELL STEP UP TO THE 351W IT WAS PURPOSE BUILT FOR THIS DISPLACEMENT. i HAVE ALREADY CRACKED THE MAIN WEBBINGS ON A ROLLER 302 BLOCK ONCE ALREADY. iF YOU WANT THE BIG RPM AND HORSES JUST STEP UP NOW OR BUY A dART BLOCK. i WILL NEXT TIME. i AGREE DO IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME.
LOL whats with all the yelling . You're one lucky guy to be able to run that kind of number with only 3.80 gears and a 2500 stall convertor. You said a best of 11.8 s , what does it usually run ?
The best time was with slicks and 75 hp nos hit. Like I said earlier 12.40s to 12.60s with street tires. It was late lat night when I replied and a little drink......lol so forgive me for the yelling I am a loud drunk
I do not run forged pistons or i would go with a little bigger hit. I have seen guys with stock 5.0l cams and heavily massage heads (factory) and 4.11 runs mid 12s also. My point was you can make a very streetable car that runs good numbers with out resorting to over camming over carbing over gearing etc....if you match things right. I run a 26" tall tire and 60 through 6300rpm I doubt a bigger stall would help me as the engines power band starts on the low side but the bigger valves 2.02 1.60s and higher comp ratio help me pull the top end. Also remember the 70 was the lightest mav made I have not officialally weighed my car I guess 2750 but I think that maybe on the high side. I have subframe connectors and south side lift bars. to help with the lauch. My only gripe is the lift bars have to be retightend more often than I would like.
