    Like i said there are a thousand ways to do it. The Roush heads in my oppoin are just not worth the money. What would it run with a set of TW trick flow heads or some AFR 165 or 185 better i bet. 2700 lb car is not very hard to get in the 12s. If you want to come to Missouri for a little race let me know LOL. I agree you dont need a big cam, it just depends on what you want, If you want a daily driver or a weekend BAD boy. Its hard to answer someones ? Unless you know exactly what they are trying to do.

    :D I am alwzys game for racin but thats just a little to far a drive.:p I would like to mention I am going to be upgradeing soon :) I am going to get the steeper 1st and 2nd gears to help with launch for the c4(ran an aod sucked pulled it out) My goal is 11.80s no juice. I think I can get real close with this setup.

    Cool. Get about another 1000 stall and it would make it come alive. It should be very drivable in a light car.

    I don't normally call B.S. on someone's post, but when you come out of the shoot claiming "BIG CAMS MEAN SH*T", I gotta disagree. Others might actually believe what you're stating.

    I don't have the time, nor the knowledge of some of the older guys here, but the basic law, "more air in and more air out equals more h.p.", contradicts your BOLD statement.

    The cam profile has a LOT to do with h.p. and torque as it directly affects the amount of air taken in over the duration of the lift.

    As far as your "A.S.E Certified Master Technician" sig goes, I'd check with your instructor regarding your statement then, hopefully, come back with a revised humble post.

    And if your instructor agrees with you that "BIG CAM'S MEAN SH*T", I'd demand a refund from the school you went to.

    (Wow! You got me all riled up on that one ;) )

    You are correct that more air means more power. However Heads have more power producing capabilities then a cam shaft ever will. In the old days(no offense) big cams would help the wheezing effects of stock heads. However these had to spin 7000 to 8000 to really make power. You can get smaller camshaft profiles and nicely engineerd heads that will walk all over this type of combo for street use. Physically speaking a motor is an air pump. However add combustion and it becomes much more.. Efficient combustion is again more important than a huge camshaft. Take the time to research this topic a great site is afr heads. They take stock roller cams and and produce amazing numbers. Could they get more with bigger cams SURE but a major point again is driveability. Most guys want driveable cars. The guys racing already know what they are getting into. Been there done that. Street drivers get frustarated there car will not idle/overheats/ no power brakes etc cause they did not build a streetable combo. Look at dyno results have you ever seen a stock motor with stock heads gain 90 hp or with a cam shaft (small block) never ,with the right heads you can, and maintain streetable manners. Look at super charged cars and turbo cars most guys choose to upgrade there heads and leave the stock cam.WHY IS THIS RICK? Simple because it works. I am proud to be an ASE master Tech and my mentor was a great teacher. I earned that title. I do not for an instance think I know all,however through learned wisdom and self education and an open mind I am not afraid to let go of old time beliefs. BIG CAMS have there place Racing so I guess I am humble.:rolleyes:

    I think Badmav's point was that heads are more critical for making power than a camshaft is. He's also saying that if you match your components correctly, you can keep it a lot more streetable than some idiot who puts a 900 CFM carburetor on a 302 with a huge cam and crappy heads, and as an added bonus, you can make the same or better power, with much better driveability and reliability.

    I understand the value of good heads (I have the AFR 185's myself).

    I suppose the 2nd mug of coffee, double-shot of Geritol, combined with your GLARING ALL CAPS, kinda sparked me this morning.

    Yes, I agree that ONLY changing cams can't have the same affect as changing heads.

    And I also agree in a 'system' approach to producing usable torque and horsepower. Not one component alone is going to be solely responsible in making usable power.

    However, you have to agree, the more aggressive the cam profile (streetability not in the equation), WILL optimize the system's output.

    Your phrase, "BIG CAMS MEAN SH*T", conveyed to me that you were implying that no matter what the cam profile, the engine will produce the same amount of power.

    I apologize for the attack on the certification, also. I normally ALWAYS promote further edumacation - and still do.

    I've taken my meds to counteract the Geritol, the coffee has worn off, and I am calmed now (see the pretty butterflies?? ;) ).

    Yes I agree with you 100 percent. It was all in good fun. Besides I started it coming home at 3 in the morning drunk and replying to a post in that state of mine..........lol That is why it was in glaring cap locks cause i could barley read it:rolleyes: So could you pass me some of that coffee;) I worry about the vast majority of people that honestly look to other people on these boards getting bad advice. I see you do as well which earns my respect. Needless to say my first motor I built ran like shit I thought it was going to be the fastest thing and ended up being a dog. I used a cam(mismatched combo) that was way to big. I guess my(hurt) pride made me jump up and speak out. I would just like to mention even though I am ASE certified I have spent the last 6mths every tuesday(my day off) hanging out at Reds Machine shop soaking in a whole lotta information pertaining to putting the right combonation together for inteneded purpose. I was shocked to learn that I had learned alot of misinformation. Red (the owner) is an old timer and has no kids so A younger guy at 26 (I started in the auto biz at 16) is a chance to feel like he has someone to pass his years of wisdom on. I also get the satisfaction of knowing someday I will to. There are many many combos choice one that fits your application. :)

    You're VERY fortunate to have someone who is willing to pass on their knowledge and experiences to you. I'm sure you're soaking up all the info you can from the guy. Wise choice.

    He probably enjoys passing the information on to you also! Thank goodness there are guys like that, as well as the good gents on this site, who share their experience. Otherwise, it'd be lost forever.

    here is what happens when you think small= maverick 72 2680LB (with me in it (I AINT SMALL) (306) 185 afr ( out of box) comp solid roller (street cam)- rpm (dual plane) (600) holley hp 3:70 gear shift-kit only c-4 shift at 6400 rpm i run 11.20&30 1.50 60 ft in 100 degree heat and a ton of humidity in baytown (will be their sat) the car has ran 10.89 in cool air and its on good old 112 racing gas only Rick it,s hard to think small but it sure is fun i tried (big is better) first i had to learn the hard way good luck

    Keep in mind that it also doesn't take as much torque to get a lightweight car like that to move so you don't need as much torque/horsepower to run good times. Fordman, your setup is VERY impressive and I love your car, it's just that most people don't have there car that lightweight. Keep up the good work and good luck at Baytown.

    your right more weight more money to move it down the track i run on a tight budget thats why the car is 2480 the cost for it is zero just a lot of work and fun

    Are you missing your floorboard or what, how'd you cut over 400 lbs off of the production weight of your mav?

    My friends mav is 2480. alum headed, alum water pump, Glass hood, doors gutted, 2 bucket seats nothing else, dash is gutted out but its still there,6 point cage. sub frame conectors though the floor. Pro stat wheels, fuel cell.
