here are my specs 79 granada block..... with crank 9.5 : 1 flat top pistons .484 xtreme energy cam with hydraulic lifts and standard size pushrods stiffer springs 4 angle valve job...heads machined .020 edelbrock performer intake edelbrock 600 cfm 4 bbl carb complete MSD ignition 2500 hughes convertor rebuilt c-4 tranny and i run 14.5 at 95 mph in the 1/4 everything else is stock...including the 14inch rims and 2.79 gears in back....3.55 posi and 8 inch rear is next
The 74 heads were no worse than the late 60's heads, and are comparable to the Mustang's E7s. The later 70s-84 were real turds... I wouldn't touch the heads. They are the same basic casting all the way back to 68, but the block is nonstandard. I don't know if you'd want to mill .023 from the heads anyway. The valvetrain geometry would be all wrong. Mill the block to stock height and then the valvetrain would align just like all the other 302s.
THE COMBOS ARE ENDLESS TO JUST HAVE A DECENT STREET RACER , THE FIRST 302 I HAD IN MY MAV. WAS BORED.030" 280 COMP. MAGNUM, 69' HEADS WITH LITTLE PORTING,STOCK VALVE,STUDS,ROCKERS,JUST PUT ON POLY LOCKS SO YOU CAN SET LASH CORRECTLY,PERFORMER INTAKE,650 DOUBLE PUMP.,3.55 GEARS from salvage MUSTNG II,c4 & 4000 stall (get rid of manual three speed if want to go fast),2 1/4 exhaust,1 5/8 full lenght ,ran 13.60's & still run 140 mph @ 6500. this combo could have used some work but was pretty cost effective! NOW 336 , CANFIELDS, MAHLE'S, 5.4 RODS , SOLID ROLLER LOTS OF $$$ P.S. HAVE NEW 1 5/8 FULL LENGTH HEDMANS FOR SALE
The .023 that BMCdanial is refering to is in the block not the heads. 73-76 blocks have a deck hight of 8.229 all other 302 blocks are 8.206. I doubt that machining .023 would have an adverse effect on valvetrain, for reference a standard sheet of paper is .004 so we are talking about 6 sheets of paper. A race motor yes .023 is alot but a street motor with hydraulic lifters it's nothing.
